Google Business Profile Service Areas and Special Hours: A Setup Guide

A local customer should know whether you can serve their address and when you are actually open. Google Business Profile lets eligible businesses describe service areas and add special hours for holidays or unusual schedules. For an Indian plumber, caterer, salon or shop, getting these two basics right can prevent wasted calls and missed visits.

Choose the correct location model

A shop where customers visit uses its real, staffed address. A service-area business that visits customers but does not serve them at its address can show service areas instead; Google's rules may require its address to be hidden. A hybrid business can have both a customer-facing location and service areas. Read the current eligibility guidance before changing an address or creating another profile.

List only places you can genuinely serve. A repair company based in one city need not add every state to appear ambitious. Think about travel time, capacity, extra visit charges and whether a customer in each named area could receive the advertised service. Google's interface allows editing the service area in the Business Profile; approval can take time, so check how the public listing looks afterward.

Set hours that match operations

Use regular hours for a normal week and special hours for a one-off holiday, festival, local closure or extended day. Google advises confirming special hours even when they are the same as regular hours on a holiday, where prompted. A restaurant should distinguish dining hours from delivery hours when the profile supports them. If customers must make appointments, explain that clearly in the profile and on the website.

A practical monthly check

  • Review service areas against actual travel coverage and prices.
  • Check the next month's public holidays and staffing plan.
  • Update special hours before the date, then view the public profile.
  • Keep the website, directory listings and customer messages consistent.
  • Assign one person to handle changes when opening hours shift unexpectedly.

Google's screens and review times can change. The aim is a truthful customer experience, not a promise that adding more areas or keywords will improve ranking. Avoid creating separate profiles for every neighbourhood unless each genuinely qualifies under the platform rules.
