Startup recognition and an income-tax exemption are separate steps. Founders often see the DPIIT recognition certificate mentioned alongside Section 80-IAC, but receiving the first does not automatically approve the second. This guide helps an eligible Indian startup plan its application without relying on agents claiming a guaranteed benefit.
DPIIT recognition is a government process for a qualifying startup. Check the current definition, entity type, age, turnover and innovation or scalability criteria on Startup India's official page. Describe the problem and the business model honestly, and prepare the information requested for the entity. A company being newly incorporated is not enough by itself to establish every criterion.
Startup India directs applicants to the National Single Window System (NSWS) for DPIIT recognition. On NSWS, find the central approval for registration as a startup and follow the current application prompts. Startup India says it charges no fee for the recognition application and has not appointed an agency or representative to file it on the government's behalf. Use the official portal and save the acknowledgement and certificate if approved.
Section 80-IAC concerns a possible profit-linked deduction for startups that meet additional legal conditions and receive the relevant approval. The official guidance identifies a separate application and assessment route. A recognition certificate alone does not establish that a business can claim the deduction. Eligibility may depend on incorporation timing, entity type, nature of the business and other tax rules; seek qualified tax advice for a claim.
Do not pay someone for a “guaranteed DPIIT certificate” or market a tax exemption before it has been approved. The official pages can change; verify the current rules and portal workflow before submitting.
