A food business in India needs to identify the right FSSAI registration or licence for its activity and size. The turnover thresholds changed in April 2026, so many older guides now show outdated figures. This is a starting checklist for a café, cloud kitchen, home food seller or packaged-food business; the activity and jurisdiction rules still need checking in the official FoSCoS system.
FSSAI's March 2026 FAQ says that, for new applications on or after 1 April 2026, the broad turnover bands are registration up to ₹1.5 crore, State licence above ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore, and Central licence above ₹50 crore. The document also says existing businesses will be given time to align through FoSCoS. These bands do not replace every activity-specific or jurisdictional rule; use FoSCoS eligibility guidance and the applicable regulations for the actual operation.
List what the business will do: preparation, manufacture, storage, transport, retail or e-commerce, and at which premises. Check the relevant business type and documents in FoSCoS. A restaurant's needs may differ from those of a manufacturer or importer. Verify that the legal name, address and contact information match your records. Keep a copy of the application and respond to any official query through the portal.
FSSAI describes licences and registrations issued from April 2026 as having perpetual validity unless suspended, cancelled or surrendered. That does not remove the duty to maintain hygiene, safety and other applicable obligations; the FAQ also discusses payment of fees and changes to a certificate. Do not treat the word “perpetual” as an exemption from compliance.
The FAQ also discusses deemed FSSAI registration for certain street vendors already registered under the Street Vendors Act, while retaining food-safety obligations. A vendor should check whether the specific situation qualifies rather than assume all stalls are automatically covered.
This guide reflects the FSSAI FAQ reviewed in September 2026. Check newer orders before filing, especially for a special business activity.
