96 Indian Coal Plants Enter Critical-Stock Category as Power Demand Rises

Ninety-six of India’s 191 coal-fired power plants were in the critical-stock category as of 19 October, Reuters reported on 21 October, citing Central Electricity Authority data. The comparable count was 60 in mid-September.

The Ministry of Coal has separately stressed that this classification is an early-warning mechanism based on a plant’s normative stock requirement. In its 9 October clarification, the ministry said the tag does not by itself establish that a station has exhausted its fuel or faces imminent shutdown.

A ministry update published on 12 October put domestic coal-based plants’ stocks at 18.205 million tonnes on 10 October. It said supplies to stations with critical stocks were being monitored and redistributed according to need. That update covers an earlier date than the 19 October figures cited by Reuters.

The stock data indicates supply pressure. It does not establish that every affected plant has stopped generation or that nationwide power cuts have been announced.
