Government Introduces Annual and Lifetime Toll Passes for National Highways

New Delhi, February 5, 2025: In a landmark move to streamline toll collection and enhance commuter convenience, the Government of India has announced the introduction of annual and lifetime toll passes for private vehicles using national highways.

According to official sources, the annual pass will cost ₹3,000, while the lifetime pass—valid for 15 years—will be available for ₹30,000. This initiative aims to simplify the toll payment process, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and encourage seamless travel for frequent highway users.

Key Highlights:

  • Affordable Pricing: ₹3,000 for an annual pass and ₹30,000 for a lifetime pass (15 years).
  • Unlimited Travel: Pass holders can travel unlimited times across all national highways without additional toll payments.
  • FASTag Integration: The passes will be linked with the existing FASTag system for hassle-free, barrier-less transactions.

Why This Matters:
Private cars make up around 60% of traffic on national highways but contribute only 20–26% of total toll revenue. By introducing these passes, the government aims to increase efficiency in toll collection while offering substantial cost benefits to regular commuters.

Implementation Plans:
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is finalizing the details, with plans to roll out the passes nationwide soon. This move aligns with the government’s broader vision of adopting a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system, which promises barrier-free travel and improved traffic management.

Public Reaction:
Early responses from commuters and transport associations have been largely positive, citing the potential for cost savings, reduced waiting times, and smoother travel experiences.
