UN-appointed independent human-rights experts called on 20 October for an independent investigation into the handling of recent protests in India, according to a statement published by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Reuters reported that the experts raised allegations of excessive force, restrictions on peaceful assembly and misuse of digital surveillance. The protests involved opposition and student groups challenging electoral-roll revisions. Those allegations are disputed: Reuters reported that India’s government said law enforcement had acted within the law. The Election Commission says the revision is intended to remove ineligible entries and allows people wrongly excluded to appeal.
In a separate report published on 21 October, The Economic Times said India’s delegation at the United Nations rejected a negative portrayal based on incomplete statistics and unverified allegations. The delegation also warned against using human-rights discussions for political pressure or selective targeting.
The experts’ call is a request for investigation. It does not establish a judicial finding that the reported allegations have been proved.
