An indigenous air-independent propulsion energy module reached a further development stage with the inauguration of Setting to Work Phase-2 activity at L&T’s Hazira complex on 24 October.
The Defence Ministry says the module was developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory. Air-independent propulsion is intended to improve a diesel-electric submarine’s underwater endurance by reducing its dependence on atmospheric oxygen.
The next phase includes energising the module for power production and testing under Navy protocols. The ministry describes a subsequent handover for planned integration on a Kalvari-class submarine in early 2027.
That sequence matters: a development milestone is not confirmation that the system has been installed, accepted or deployed aboard an operational submarine.
The release provides no basis for a precise endurance claim. Any such figure, or a claim of completed induction, needs separate verified evidence.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted.
