A masked document and a Virtual ID are not the same privacy tool. Choose the option that fits the verification process you are actually using.
UIDAI explains that Masked Aadhaar hides the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number, leaving the last four visible in e-Aadhaar. Virtual ID is a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped to Aadhaar for authentication or e-KYC.
A masked document remains a document containing personal information. Hiding part of its number does not mean that every other detail is anonymous. Share it only for a clear purpose and through an appropriate channel.
A VID is used in the supported authentication process; it is not a replacement photograph of an identity card. Generate or retrieve it through UIDAI’s official options and keep it out of public messages.
Ask the receiving organisation what verification method is required before sending multiple versions of your identity information. Do not assume that every form accepts every format.
This guide does not guarantee universal acceptance or complete protection from identity misuse. It helps separate document sharing from authentication so you can avoid disclosing more information than the particular process calls for.
